What kind of surf this is
Porto Covo is a quieter proposition than Ericeira or Peniche. This is an exposed stretch of Atlantic beach break on the Alentejo coast: uncrowded, unpretentious, and entirely dependent on swell and wind. On the right morning it is excellent and you will share it with a handful of people. On a flat August afternoon with the nortada blowing, it is a swim, not a session.

Where
The three beaches worth paddling out at
Praia da Vieirinha is the best of them, a long, open beach north towards Sines with a restaurant and a surf school on the sand. It is a short drive rather than a walk from the village, which is the only thing against it. Go there when you want a session rather than a swim.
Praia Grande is the one you can walk to: a wide, west-facing beach that picks up whatever the Atlantic is offering, with easy access and room to spread out. It is also where lessons run, so it is the friendliest place to be a beginner.
Praia dos Buizinhos is the one surfers talk about, a smaller cove framed by volcanic rock just north of Praia Grande, popular with surfers and snorkellers alike. Respect the rock: what makes it good also makes it unforgiving at size and at low water.
When
Seasons, wind and what to wear
- October to March. The swell season. Biggest, most consistent surf, coldest water, empty line-ups.
- April to September. Smaller and less reliable, but warm and perfect for learning.
- Surf mornings. The northerly nortada gets up most summer afternoons and blows the surf out; dawn sessions are usually the clean ones.
- Wetsuit. The Atlantic here runs about 16-19°C through the swimming season and drops to 14.7°C in February. This is full-suit water for most visitors, most of the year.
Learning
A first lesson
Beginner surf and stand-up-paddle lessons run on Praia Grande and around Ilha do Pessegueiro, with boards and wetsuits provided, so there is nothing to bring or carry. Summer is the right time to learn here: smaller surf, warmer water, and a wide sandy beach with lifeguards from June to September.
Two operators work this coast. CCBoard Center runs a shop in Porto Covo village on Rua Vasco da Gama and a licensed surf school based in Vila Nova de Milfontes, about 30 minutes south, and it is the one that teaches on Praia Grande. Lessons are certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation, capped at six or seven students per instructor, and all equipment and insurance are included in the price.

Hiring a board at Vieirinha
If you are driving to Vieirinha anyway, the hut on the sand is the simplest way to get a board: nothing to carry from the village, and nothing to book. It is run by the Escola de Surf do Litoral Alentejano, founded in 1998 and the first surf school in the Alentejo.
