The day to avoid eating out in Porto Covo
Five places shut on a Tuesday, including two of the best-known tables. Both of the cheap options shut on a Sunday. And for nine of them nobody publishes a closing day at all.
If you are only going to remember one thing from this page, make it Tuesday.
Ti Joaquim and Figo are both closed. So are By the Sea and Pérola de Porto Covo. A Cantarinha is too, except in July and August, when it stays open. That is five places shut on the same evening, and two of them are the tables people specifically arrive wanting.
Wednesday takes the other two
Zé Inácio and Doce Mar both close on Wednesday. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, then, you lose four of the best-known kitchens in the village across two consecutive evenings.
O Pescador closes on Thursday, which is the easiest of the three to work around.
Sunday is the one that catches people on a budget
A Marmita, the village takeaway with the churrasco chicken and the daily plates, closes on Sunday. So does Kalunga, the restaurant at the campsite. Those are the two places you go when you do not want to spend much, and they are shut on the same day, which is also the day most people want a takeaway.
Nothing else published anywhere says this. Plan the Sunday before you get to Sunday.
Winter shortens three of them
Lamelas, La Bella Vita and A Marmita all publish separate winter hours, and all three run shorter. A Cantarinha and Kalunga do too. Everything on this coast contracts out of season, so treat any summer timing you read as summer timing.
Brisa Mar goes the other way and is worth knowing about for it: in summer its kitchen runs to four in the morning, which makes it the answer when everywhere else has stopped.
And the ones where nobody publishes anything
For nine of the places we list, the parish directory records no closing day at all: O Sorriso, Lamelas, La Bella Vita, Restaurante do Luís, Slow Sea, Restaurante A Ilha, A.MAR Praia Grande, Miramar and A Petisqueira do Primo Xico.
We could guess. We are not going to, because a guess about whether somewhere is open is worse than no answer when you have already driven there with hungry children. For those nine, ring. Every number is on our restaurants guide.
