Asked before booking

Is there a barbecue?

No. It is an apartment on a terrace, so there is no charcoal grill and there will not be one. Guests who wanted to grill have used the oven grill instead, and Ivy will talk you through it. One put it best: the food was the same and nobody smelled of charcoal afterwards.

Can you work from the apartment?

Yes. The third bedroom has a desk by the balcony door and there is wifi throughout. Two separate guests this summer used it for real work, one clearing email between beach days and one running meetings, and neither was asked about it.

Do you need a car in Porto Covo?

Not to use the village. The beach, the square, the restaurants and the shops are all a walk from the door. You do need one, or something booked, for arriving with luggage and for the beaches further down the coast. There is a taxi rank in Porto Covo, on Rua do Norte by the Os Correios stationery shop, on 967 678 171. Uber and Bolt work here but the cars come out from Sines, so expect 17 to 30 minutes: one guest in August gave up waiting and wished he had booked ahead.

Is the terrace safe with small children?

The glass is full height, so there is nothing to climb and nothing to see over, and the terrace door locks from the inside. Guests with toddlers have kept it locked when nobody was out there. The pool is on that terrace and has no fence and no lifeguard, so a small child at the pool needs an adult at the pool, the same as anywhere.

How many people does Blue Cove sleep?

Blue Cove sleeps six across three bedrooms (two doubles and a twin) with three bathrooms. Everyone gets a real bedroom; nobody sleeps on a sofa bed.

Does the apartment have a private pool?

Yes. Blue Cove has its own private heated pool and terrace with sun loungers, for the use of your party only. It is not a shared complex pool. Ask Ivy and she switches the heating on.

What is the minimum stay at Blue Cove?

There is no fixed minimum. Send your dates and Ivy will tell you what is possible.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 16:00 and check-out is by 11:00. Check-in is handled by the Pestana Porto Covo Village reception, which is open 08:00 to 20:00 every day. If you expect to arrive after 20:00, tell Ivy in advance and she will arrange it.

How far is Blue Cove from the beach?

Praia Grande, the main Blue Flag beach in Porto Covo, is about 500 metres away, roughly a five-minute walk from the door. Twelve more beaches lie within a short walk or drive.

Is there parking at Blue Cove?

Yes. Parking is inside the gated Pestana Porto Covo Village development, so there is no need to compete for village parking in July and August. EV charging is available on site.

Is there anyone on site if we need help?

Yes. Blue Cove is a privately owned apartment inside Pestana Porto Covo Village, which is a licensed tourist development rather than a standalone holiday let. That means a staffed reception open 08:00 to 20:00 every day, on-site maintenance and security, and gated grounds. Not a keybox on a garden wall. Ivy owns the apartment and answers every message herself.

My daughter is a teenager and the space was more than welcome. The third bedroom worked as an office and let me finish some meetings and some work.

The apartment is decorated as though it were a home, well above anywhere we have stayed. The sunset is really something. It was my Instagram for a week.

I used the restaurants guide and rang every one of them. Everything was correct. I could not get dinner at Ze Inacio because I did not book in time, but I called Lamelas and got a table two days later, and we would clearly go back to Lamelas. In the evening, mother and daughter out in the village, it was faultless: it is full of life and it felt safe for everyone.

What was worse than expected

The only thing that would worry me, if my daughter were younger, is that the pool needs supervision for smaller children. I would not be relaxed leaving a child of eight or nine there. It may be paranoia on my part.

Four people in a three-bedroom was ideal: one room for me and my wife, one for my daughter and one for my son.

We cooked, and to be honest it did not feel different from home. We could do everything. Eating on the terrace at sunset was a very good experience, with the evening breeze and that view.

The pool meant they could be at ease, but they are ten and twelve. If they were younger we would have been watching, as in fact we always were, because even at that age we kept looking over regularly. What I was not expecting, and what turned out to be very useful, was the lawn in the complex: playing football with my son, room to run around and play inside a gated development, that was a bonus we had not counted on.

What was worse than expected

I was a bit apprehensive about the barbecue question. A grill would have been a good addition, but I understand there is not one in an apartment. After talking to Ivy, and her explaining how to do the grilling in the oven, it was a good alternative, and in the end I did not smell of charcoal.

We flew into Lisbon and rented a car. We thought about not renting one and just using Ubers, because everything is walking distance from the apartment, but we had too many bags with the little one and we were worried there'd be no easy access to taxis in the village. We were right — there wasn't. Getting one out of Sines took a while.

We thought three bedrooms and three bathrooms was more than we needed, and honestly we could have lived with two. It ended up working really well. One of the kids was unwell one night and I moved into that room to settle him down. We were a bit worried about whether we'd end up at a hospital, and Ivy sent us the link with the contacts and had a plan. We never had to use it, but having the extra room was definitely a good call.

We used the pool all the time. He loved it, and the fact that it's heated made a real difference — he spent long stretches in there, which the 28 degrees definitely made possible. We were always in there with him, mind you. I wouldn't step aside at any pool with a 3-year-old.

The terrace is a relaxing place and we could always see him. The glass is high, so there was no fear of him falling or trying to climb up to peek over. It was perfect.

What was worse than expected

The taxi and Uber situation, and no home delivery. We get it, and it makes sense there isn't any — that's more on us than on the village or the property. But it would be nice to have.

I let the girls run in the garden of the complex. They ventured off, but I was always within shouting distance. The village felt safe, but there are cars and more people there, so it does not give you the same freedom. The complex is gated, but it is cosy: it has the garden, the buildings are low, it does not look industrial at all.

The pool never let me relax, not least because the five-year-old cannot swim. But I never leave the girls in a pool unsupervised, in any pool. The terrace key, though, let me sleep: I locked the door whenever I was not out there and never had a problem.

We went to the beach every day, but when we were at the apartment we did what we do at home, cooking and television. Plus what the apartment gives you: dinner on the terrace, watching the sunset, relaxing by the pool.

What was worse than expected

There was one day when we lost track of the tide at Praia da Gaivota and had to do some scrambling to get out in a hurry, up one of the slopes. It was an adventure, but it left me a bit stressed.

I came with a friend and, although it is a three-bedroom and looked like more space than we needed, it was the right choice. The alternative was a two-bedroom without the amenities this one has, and the location helped too. The terrace made the difference, and the pool is a good reason to take it slowly in the morning or at the end of the day.

We went fishing at Praia Pequena and at other coves. I do not know the names exactly, but there is always somewhere to go, and when you do not know, you copy where everyone else is. People here are extremely friendly and give you all the tips.

On the days we did not go to the beach or fishing, we stayed by the pool and caught up on the terrace. It also let me clear my email, get some work done at the desk, and use the gym in the complex.

What was worse than expected

We did not see the restaurant recommendations on the website and went a bit on luck. We arrived on a Sunday at nine in the evening, the two places nearest the apartment were closed, and most of the village was full. We ended up eating pizza, which was not what we wanted from our first night in Porto Covo.
