Is the sea warm enough to swim in at Porto Covo?
September and October are the warmest the sea gets here, warmer than July, on empty beaches.
Is the Alentejo coast too cold to swim in October?
No, not on the temperature. October averages 18.4 °C here, a shade above August and warmer than July.
How hot does Porto Covo get in summer?
About 25 °C by day in August, while inland Alentejo passes 35 °C.
When are there lifeguards on the beaches at Porto Covo?
13 June to 19 September in 2026. Outside those dates there are no lifeguards anywhere in the parish.
Is Porto Covo busy in August?
Yes. August is the peak: the Praia Grande car park fills before 10am and the popular restaurants book out nightly.
Is there a wheelchair-accessible beach in Porto Covo?
No. No Porto Covo beach is on the national accessible-beaches programme, including Praia Grande.
Which Porto Covo beaches have a Blue Flag?
Two in Porto Covo itself: Praia Grande and Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro, both also Quercus "Praia de Ouro". A short drive north, Praia da Vieirinha holds one too.
Can you watch the sunrise over the sea at Porto Covo?
No, and it is worth knowing before you set an alarm. Porto Covo faces west, so the sun sets over the Atlantic and rises inland, behind the village. Sunset is the sea event here. Sunrise is the land one.
What are the tides doing at Porto Covo?
Two highs and two lows a day, roughly six hours apart, and this site works out the ones for today rather than pointing you at a table.
Which Porto Covo beaches are cut off at high tide?
Praia das Gaivotas is the one we know closes. The sand route from Praia do Banho shuts as the tide comes in. It is not the only cove where that can happen, and we are not going to pretend we know exactly which others do. What matters more is who is with you. A narrow way back that a sure-footed adult walks in a minute is a different proposition with a pushchair, with small children, with anyone unsteady on wet rock, or if you do not know the path. So use the rule rather than the list: if the tide is rising, take a beach with steps down or wide open sand. Praia Grande, Praia da Vieirinha and Praia do Pessegueiro all keep sand at any state of the tide. Leave the small coves for a falling tide.
Is there a Pingo Doce or Continente in Porto Covo?
No. The village has four small shops; the nearest full supermarket is in Sines, about 15 minutes by car.

One lesson €45, five for €160. Children to age 10 pay €35-€120. Board hire €25 a day, wetsuit €7.50.
Can you walk to Pessegueiro Island?
No. It is reached by boat from the harbour, and the channel is open Atlantic water at any state of the tide.
