Porto Covo's beaches all sit along one short stretch of the Alentejo coast, but each has a distinct character. If you only have a day or two, start here:

Tide, wind, and where to swim
The Atlantic decides this, not us. Two beaches here change with the tide and several are open to the summer north-westerly, so the answer to "which beach" is different at eleven in the morning than at five in the afternoon.

Getting onto the sand, and step-free access
Honest answer, because nobody publishes this one: no Porto Covo beach is on Portugal's national accessible-beaches programme, "Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos". That includes Praia Grande, despite its Blue Flag, lifeguards and good parking.
The nearest beach carrying the accessible designation is Praia Vasco da Gama in Sines, about 15 minutes by car, which has adapted toilets and the full programme standard: matted walkways over the sand, ramps at a usable gradient, reserved parking and lifeguards trained in assisted access.

Status checked against the national accessible-beaches list and the Câmara Municipal de Sines beach pages on 5 August 2026. Not being on the programme does not necessarily mean there is no ramp at all. It means the beach has not been certified to the full standard.
Beach tips for Porto Covo
- Watch the tide at Praia das Gaivotas. The sand route in from Praia do Banho closes as the tide rises, and the way out then is up a slope. A guest this August lost track of the time and had to climb out in a hurry with a five-year-old and an eight-year-old. It is fine on a falling tide and it is not the only cove where this can happen, so the rule is better than the list: rising tide, take a beach with steps or wide open sand. Praia Grande, Praia da Vieirinha and Praia do Pessegueiro keep sand at any state of the tide.
- Arrive before 10am in July and August. Praia Grande's car park fills early; parking near the village beaches is limited in peak season.
- The afternoon "nortada" wind. A northerly wind picks up most summer afternoons. When the main beach turns choppy, head to sheltered Praia do Banho or Praia da Cerca Nova.
- Check the tide for the coves. Several small beaches (Espingardeiro, Porto Covinho) all but disappear at high water. At low tide they are beautiful.
- Praia do Salto is an official naturist beach, recognised since 2002. Go knowing that.

Are there beaches you can walk to from the village?
Yes. Praia Grande, Praia Pequena, Praia dos Pescadores and several coves are all within a short walk. The wilder southern beaches are a few minutes by car.
Can you watch the sunrise over the sea at Porto Covo?
No. Porto Covo faces west, so the sun sets over the Atlantic and rises inland, behind the village. Sunset is the sea event here. What sunrise gives you instead is the cliffs lit face-on rather than in silhouette, on empty sand.
What are the tides doing at Porto Covo?
Two highs and two lows a day, roughly six hours apart. The tide decides which coves still have sand and when to start walking back, so the beach-day planner on this site works out the state of the tide for the hour you are actually going.
Is Porto Covo good for surfing?
Yes. Praia dos Buizinhos and the exposed Atlantic beaches pick up consistent swell, strongest from October to March.
