Hotels in Porto Covo: what actually exists
Porto Covo is a fishing village of about a thousand people, and people searching for a hotel here are usually surprised by what they find. There are three. Everything else — and there is plenty of it — is apartments, guesthouses and campsites. Here is the real shape of it, and which kind suits which trip.
The count
What there is to stay in, in numbers
Counted from the Junta de Freguesia de Porto Covo business directory on 15 August 2026 — the same source behind our restaurant opening hours. It is a directory of businesses that chose to list themselves, not a register, so read every number here as a floor rather than a total. Walk the village and you will pass apartments that are not on it.
Small, and two of them sit slightly outside the old village. None is a large resort hotel in the sense a search result implies.
The overwhelming majority of what the directory lists: private homes, apartments and small guesthouses, most let by their owners. The true count in the village is higher.

That is 45 places listed in a village you can cross on foot in ten minutes, and the real figure is higher still, since listing is voluntary. The shortage is not choice. It is beds in August.

Which kind
Hotel, apartment, guesthouse or campsite?
- A hotel makes sense for one night in transit, or if you want somebody at a desk. What it will not give you here is hotel dining — the village eats in its own restaurants, and you will be walking to them either way.
- An apartment is what most people actually want in Porto Covo, and the reason is the kitchen. The nearest full supermarket is fifteen minutes away in Sines, so being able to cook what you bring back matters more here than in a town.
- A guesthouse suits couples and short stays — smaller, often family-run, usually in the old village within a few streets of the sea.
- A campsite is the cheapest way in, and genuinely pleasant on this coast in June and September. In August, book months out.

If you are walking the Fishermen’s Trail
Porto Covo is the northern start of the Fishermen’s Trail, so a large share of the village’s beds in spring and autumn go to walkers. What matters for a walking stay is not a hotel star rating — it is a washing machine, a kitchen, and somewhere to dry boots. More on staying here between stages.
Blue Cove
A 3-bedroom apartment inside Pestana Porto Covo Village
We are one of the 45. Blue Cove is a privately owned three-bedroom apartment sleeping six, inside the Pestana Porto Covo Village complex, about 500 m from Praia Grande — with a private heated pool — the only heated one we can find in the parish. (One other property advertises a private pool, out in the countryside and not heated.) It is let directly by its owner, Ivy, and enquiring with her is what secures it: it is not in the hotel reservation system, so nothing else can allocate this apartment to you.
