The Rota Vicentina from Porto Covo

Porto Covo is the official northern trailhead of the Fishermen's Trail, one of Europe's great coastal walks. Here is everything you need to plan it: the stages, the difficulty, when to walk, and where to sleep the night before you set off.

The trail

What is the Fishermen's Trail?

The Rota Vicentina is a network of walking routes along Portugal's southwest coast. Its most famous strand is the Fishermen's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores), a path that hugs the clifftops on the sandy trails once used by local fishermen to reach their catch. It runs entirely within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, the most protected stretch of coastline in Western Europe.

Porto Covo is the official northern trailhead. The waymarked route sets off from the village clifftops and heads south, which is exactly why staying here the night before you start is the natural way to begin. The trail is marked with green-and-blue stripes and follows soft sand and cliff paths, not tarmac.

Walking options from Porto Covo

Three ways to take on the trail from the village, from an easy afternoon loop to a full seven-day traverse to the Algarve border:

Porto Covo is where Stage 1 of the Fishermen's Trail begins: the 20 km walk south to Vila Nova de Milfontes, and the first leg of the seven-stage route to Odeceixe. Walkers usually count the trail in stages rather than kilometres, so if you have been told to "start at stage 1", this village is the start line. The night before it matters more than any night after, because the stage begins on sand and there is nowhere to stop for the first two hours.

Before you go

Planning and logistics

  • Walk north to south. The trail is designed to be walked from Porto Covo southward, keeping the sun and prevailing wind behind you.
  • Best months are March to June and September to October. Summer is walkable but hot and exposed; there is little shade on the cliffs.
  • The sand is the challenge, not the climbs. Elevation is gentle, but long stretches of soft sand make distances feel longer. Gaiters help.
  • Carry at least 2 litres of water. There are no refill points between villages. Start early to beat the afternoon heat.
  • Luggage transfer exists. Local operators move your bag between stage villages so you walk with a daypack. Book ahead in summer. We are happy to point you to a provider.

Common questions

Rota Vicentina FAQ

Where does the Fishermen's Trail start?

The northern trailhead is in Porto Covo, on the village clifftops. From there the waymarked route runs south to Odeceixe on the Algarve border.

How long is Porto Covo to Vila Nova de Milfontes?

About 38 km, walked over two days (roughly 20 km to Almograve, then 18 km to Vila Nova de Milfontes).

Is the Fishermen's Trail difficult?

It is rated easy-to-moderate on elevation, but the soft sand underfoot makes it more tiring than the distances suggest. There is little shade, so heat is the main difficulty in summer.

Do I need a guide?

No. The route is well waymarked with green-and-blue stripes. Most walkers go self-guided, using luggage transfer between villages.

Where should I stay to walk the Fishermen's Trail?

Not in one place, mostly. The trail is point to point and each stage ends in a different village, so walkers move each night and use luggage transfer between them. The bed that everyone does need is the one before Stage 1, and that is Porto Covo, where the waymarked route starts. If you would rather stay put than repack every morning, the other way to do it is to base here and walk a stretch out and back, which works because the first section south is the one most people come for.

When is the best time to walk it?

Spring (March to June) and early autumn (September to October): mild temperatures, wildflowers in spring, and quieter beaches.
