Porto Covo has thirteen beaches within half an hour on foot, and on any given afternoon they are not equally good. One cove is reached along the sand and closes at high water. Several sit behind cliffs that block the summer north-westerly, while the main beach takes it full on. Pick your departure time and this works out the rest.

What is behind the answer

Two things drive it. The tide, taken at the hour you would actually arrive rather than the hour you set off, because a fifteen-minute walk matters when the water is moving. The wind, from the same hour, matched against which beaches are sheltered and which are open.

Where a beach is not recommended, it is because something rules it out, not because it scored poorly. And where we have not checked a beach on the ground, it says so and stays out of the ranking. That gap is deliberate: guessing which cove cuts off is the one mistake here that could strand somebody, so an honest blank beats a confident invention.

Which Porto Covo beaches are cut off at high tide?

Praia das Gaivotas is the one we know closes. The sand route from Praia do Banho shuts as the tide comes in. It is not the only cove where that can happen, and we are not going to pretend we know exactly which others do. What matters more is who is with you. A narrow way back that a sure-footed adult walks in a minute is a different proposition with a pushchair, with small children, with anyone unsteady on wet rock, or if you do not know the path. So use the rule rather than the list: if the tide is rising, take a beach with steps down or wide open sand. Praia Grande, Praia da Vieirinha and Praia do Pessegueiro all keep sand at any state of the tide. Leave the small coves for a falling tide.

Which beaches are sheltered from the wind?

Praia do Banho, Praia da Cerca Nova, Praia dos Pescadores and Praia das Gaivotas sit behind cliffs that block the north-westerly. Praia Grande is the exposed one. On a nortada afternoon it is noticeably windier than the coves a few minutes away.

What is the nortada?

The steady north-westerly that blows down this coast through the summer, usually building through the afternoon. It is why the sheltered coves exist and why a beach that was perfect at eleven can be sandblasted by four. The planner treats anything from 15 km/h out of the north-west as blowing.

How accurate is the tide shown here?

It is a model forecast for the water off Porto Covo, refreshed every half hour, not the Instituto Hidrográfico table for a named port. It is good enough to plan an afternoon around and to know whether the tide is rising or falling. For anything where being wrong matters, check an official tide table as well.
