What is genuinely harder in October is everything except the temperature: this is open Atlantic, the swell and the wind build through the autumn, and the lifeguards leave on 19 September, after which there are none anywhere in the parish. No, and it is worth knowing before you set an alarm. Porto Covo faces west, so the sun sets over the Atlantic and rises inland, behind the village. Sunset is the sea event here. Sunrise is the land one. The coast here runs roughly north to south with the ocean on the west, which settles it: no west-facing beach in Portugal gets a sunrise out of the water. What sunrise does give you is the better light on the rock. With the sun low behind you, the cliffs and the stacks are lit face-on rather than in silhouette, and the beaches are empty. Praia das Gaivotas is the one we know closes. The sand route from Praia do Banho shuts as the tide comes in. It is not the only cove where that can happen, and we are not going to pretend we know exactly which others do. What matters more is who is with you. A narrow way back that a sure-footed adult walks in a minute is a different proposition with a pushchair, with small children, with anyone unsteady on wet rock, or if you do not know the path. So use the rule rather than the list: if the tide is rising, take a beach with steps down or wide open sand. Praia Grande, Praia da Vieirinha and Praia do Pessegueiro all keep sand at any state of the tide. Leave the small coves for a falling tide. Go on a falling tide. About 170 km, or 1 hour 45 minutes by car, on the A2 south and then Sines. From Lisbon Airport it is about 175 km and 1h50; from Faro Airport about 140 km and 1h30; from Porto about 470 km and 4h30. There is no train to Porto Covo and no direct bus from Lisbon worth planning around, so a car is the practical answer for everyone except Fishermen’s Trail walkers, who arrive on foot. The nearest town of any size is Sines, 15 minutes away, which is where the full supermarkets, the pharmacy and the health centre are. In the village itself, very little: there is no cinema, no museum and no covered attraction in Porto Covo. What people actually do is drive. Sines is 20 minutes away and has the castle with its Vasco da Gama museum; Badoca Safari Park is about 30 minutes inland and works in rain because most of it is driven rather than walked; the Roman ruins at Mirobriga are also about 30 minutes, though those are open-air and only worth it in light rain. In the village, the restaurants are the answer, and the closing days matter more on a wet day than a dry one because there is nowhere else to wait. This coast gets most of its rain between November and March, so a wet day in summer is unusual enough that the honest advice is to treat it as a reading day. No. The village has four small shops; the nearest full supermarket is in Sines, about 15 minutes by car. Sines has Lidl, Pingo Doce, Intermarché and Continente Bom Dia within a few doors of each other, so the big shop is one stop rather than four.
